10 Best Original Song Winners At The Oscars

By Mary Fournier

Everyone is talking about the Oscars last night, you know the coverage of it is everywhere. From the winners to the best moments, the most cringe-inducing to the most random. And nothing was more random than when Eminem appeared on stage to perform Lose Yourself when he won the award for Best Original Song in 2002. However, I guess it was good for something as it got me thinking about other Original Song winners we might have forgotten about but would still sing along to at the top of our lungs.

10-Streets Of Philadelphia

While not the happiest of songs, it deserves a spot for how powerful the lyrics are. The song ties in perfectly with the film it is made for (Philadelphia) and by the time the song ends, you’ll definitely be in your feelings.

9-Flashdance… What A Feeling

There’s nothing better than a song that’s upbeat and all about empowering yourself. Mixed with a beat that’s classically 80’s? You better take your passion and make it happen, baby!

8-A Whole New World

Name a couple who have dressed up as Jasmine and Aladdin for Halloween and quoted a lyric from this song in their Insta caption. That’s all the reason you need.

7-Can You Feel The Love Tonight

We didn’t deserve the masterpiece that Elton John created for The Lion King soundtrack. Hakuna Matata really should have been the winner, but that’s another story. This song hits right in the childhood and makes you want to watch The Lion King ASAP.

6-You’ll Be In My Heart

Phil Collins didn’t have to go that hard on the Tarzan soundtrack but he did it anyway. You probably won’t be jamming out to this song in the car but you’ll definitely get hit with some nostalgia listening to it.

5-Take My Breath Away

I’m going to call it and say Berlin made the cheesy pick-up line “you take my breath away” popular. This song is perfect to sing along to when you’re in that head-over-heels stage of a relationship.

4-I’ve Had The Time Of My Life

If you tell me you’re not waiting for someone to lift you up into the air while this song plays you’re a liar. These days you’ll probably hear it the most at weddings but you’ll definitely get up and dance and watch Dirty Dancing when you get home.

3-Lose Yourself

You knew this song was going to make an appearance on this list. From the first beat, you’re already bobbing your head. This song is all about hyping you up and to take all the chances you can to turn your dreams into reality regardless of the obstacles, what’s not Oscar-worthy about that?

2-Shallow

We were all going off the deep end when this song came out. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s voices complimented each other so well and that final verse Gaga belts gives me chills. And their performance at last years Oscars? Let’s not even start.

1-My Heart Will Go On

If this song didn’t win an Oscar I’d be protesting. You can’t deny that this classic by our Canadian gal, Celine Dion doesn’t make you feel some kind of way. Whether it’s thinking about Rose never letting go of Jack or adding it to your post-breakup playlist, you’re putting your vocal chops to the test.
