The Washington Nationals are in the World Series, Montreal Expos Fans Feeling... Mixed

On Tuesday night, the Washington Nationals won the National League Championship Series, by sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals in four games (4 games to 0 in a best-of-7 series) and earning a trip to the World Series, for the first time in franchise history.

For fans in the U.S. nation’s capital, it’s a time to celebrate. But what about for fans in Canada who grew up with the Montreal Expos?

As many of you know, the Expos began play in 1969 and called Montreal home until the end of the 2004 season. In 1981, the Expos won the made the playoffs once in their history. They would lose to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 5 games. (3 games to 2 in a best-of-5 series)

The franchise moved to Washington in 2005. There are several reasons for causing for the Expos move (including 1994 players strike, bad ownership, funding for a new stadium falling through, low attendance, and so on).

So, how are Montreal baseball fans feeling now that their former club will be playing for a world championship. In one word… MIXED. Of course, many fans put their emotions up on Twitter.

Negative feelings include sadness, anger and reflection…

However, there are A LOT fans who are rooting for the Nationals, as if the Expos were still in Montreal. Some fans even went to the clinching game in Washington, wearing Expos colours!!

So, even after their beloved team moved down south 14 years ago, many Montreal Expos fan will be cheering their beloved team (sort of) in this year’s World Series, beginning on October 22nd.

If these fans are this excited about the Nationals playoff run, imagine how they will be if (and when) Major League Baseball returns to Montreal in the future! Vive Les Expos!
