Mysterious missed calls could be part of a worldwide phone scam

Have you been getting mysterious missed phone calls from an overseas number to your cell phone?

If you do it would be safe to ignore.

It could be part of a worldwide phone scam that has resurfaced in Canada. The calls show up on your phone as a missed call and come from overseas locations like Albania, Macedonia or the Seychelles.

The goal of the scam is to get you curious enough to call back, and then keep you on the line long enough to rack up long distance charges.

Past reports have recorded long distance rates anywhere from $20 per minute to hundreds of dollars. It’s not clear if customers will have to a pay a bill from their service provider or another source, so it’s best to not feed into curiosity and ignore the call.
